Reusing Extra Long Positions

Modified on Thu, 22 Jun, 2023 at 12:45 AM

New in version 2.0 is the ability to reuse extra existing long positions, instead of buying new long wings for each trade.

When this option is enabled, TAT will evaluate all long positions in the account that are not currently part of an open position and include those legs in possible trade options. The existing long will only be used as part of a new trade if it can be used in a trade that satisfies all criteria for that trade template (premium target, width, etc.)

When a long is reused on a new trade you will see a row in the logs similar to:

Reusing 4145 C

IMPORTANT NOTE: This functionality will look at all positions in the IBKR account where the trade is being entered when searching for extra long positions and will find positions not opened directly by TAT. For that reason, this should only be enabled if you are not making any manual trade in the same account that TAT is trading.

This option can be enabled on the Settings page by setting long strike reuse to "Reuse for New Entry".

Aggressive Mode

In the standard mode of long reuse, there are situations where a new long strike will be purchased even though there are long strikes available for re-use. This most commonly occurs if reusing the "free" long strike would result in a trade outside of your premium target range.

With aggressive reuse mode, TAT will always re-use existing long strikes, even if that means your trade entry is slightly outside of your normal target premium range or would result in a more unbalanced fill price for puts vs. calls on an iron condor entry. (However, it will still NOT re-use a long that would exceed your width/max width setting for the template.)
